History of Rock Fort Temple in Trichy
It
is only the presence of the age old architecture that makes us understand the
greatness of history! My quest for the historical manifestations was once again
slaked when I found out about the iconic Rock-fort Temple of Trichy. Positioned on the top of a 273 feet high rock, the
Tiruchirapalli Rock Fort is a huge complex constituting a huge fort and two
main temples. The construction of the complex was started by the Pallavas but
it was the Nayaks of Madurai who led to the completion of the temples.
The
Tiruchirappalli Fort has been deemed as one of the oldest architectures in the
world considering the history of this place which dates back to almost 3
billion years ago. The temple complex comprises of two temples dedicated to
Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha. A big climb of 473 steps is needed to reach
the temple complex. As history speaks, it
took 300 men a course of eleven years to carve out the huge rock. The fort was
also used in the Carnatic wars which led to the establishment of the British
Empire in the Southern Part of India.
